Lewis beats Red Bull’s Ricciardo to pole in Melbourne

2014 Australian Grand Prix – Lewis takes pole in Melbourne

After marking his territory in Q1′s dry but windy conditions laying down Pirelli’s finest on the exits of the 16 turns of Melbourne’s Albert Park street circuit, Lewis Hamilton followed this up in Q3 with a perfect display of car control on the now very wet street circuit. Armed with full wets, and armfuls of opposite lock that would have had drifter Shane Lynch raising an eyebrow, Lewis pipped both his Mercedes team mate Niko Rosberg and Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo to pole position.

To see the qualifying results of the 2014 Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix read on to the table that follows……….

Mercedes 2 – 1 Red Bull Racing-Renault

For a moment Ricciardo had the home crowd cheering with delight when he crossed the line for the final time in qualifying putting his name up on the boards against P1, before Hamilton’s turbocharged Mercedes powered across the line dropping Ricciardo back into P2. Niko Rosberg had already posted a time quick enough to secure P3, promising a great start to tomorrow’s 2014 Australian Grand Prix by the Mercedes team, but Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel failed to make it out of Q2 leaving the current world champion behind in P12 following the 5 place grid penalty imposed on Williams’ Valtteri Bottas following a gearbox change.
